Larger Catechism – Day 14 of Lent
Question 37: How
did Christ, the Son of God, become human?
Answer: Christ the Son of God became human by taking a true body and a
reasoning soul. He was conceived by the
power of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mary out of her substance
and was born of her, but he was sinless.
The miracle of conception of Jesus is absolute crucial in his
being the only mediator of the covenant of grace. The Holy Spirit was a part of the conception
so that Jesus would be fully God. Mary
was a part of the conception process so that he would be fully human. Jesus’ humanness would then fulfill the
covenant of works and provide the blood sacrifice for our sins. Jesus’ divine side would transfer his
righteousness to those who have received him so that they can enter into the
presence of Almighty God and be in relationship to him.
In the Garden of Eden the Lord God commanded Adam that he could
not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve was deceived by Satan. Adam flatly disobeyed God. In Genesis 3 it appears that Adam is close at
hand when Eve eats of the forbidden fruit.
The Apostle Paul says that through one man “sin” (not sins)
entered into the world. Adam was given
the command. Adam should have stopped
Eve from eating of the forbidden fruit.
It is through Adam that sin enters into the world.
A male’s sperm is not used to conceive Jesus. The original sin that was passed from
generation to generation through the male was not passed on to Jesus. Mary’s DNA was the source of Jesus’
humanness.
Those who would seek to deny the Virgin Birth are basically
denying that Jesus was God and Man. If
Joseph is Jesus’ biological father then Jesus is not divine. If Joseph is Jesus’ father then original sin
was passed on to Jesus. If all of Jesus’
DNA was of the Holy Spirit then Jesus was not human—God with us. If Jesus wasn’t human then there was no
person who totally fulfilled the covenant of works.
No virgin birth = no sinless sacrifice by Jesus.
