Larger Catechism – Day 30 of Lent
Question 56: How
is Christ exalted by coming again to judge the world?
Answer: Coming again to judge the world exalts Christ, who was unjustly
judged and condemned by wicked men. His coming again at the last day in great
power will fully reveal his own and his Father’s glory, and with all his holy
angels, accompanied by a shout of command, the voice of the archangel, and the
trumpet of God, he will judge the world in righteousness.
Jesus’ ultimate victory will be when he returns to earth as
victor, judge, justifier and King. The
plan for all of human history will be realized at Jesus’ triumphant
return. Jesus will be fully revealed at
that time. Some will celebrate. Many will be shocked.
Many may ask, “Why does Jesus need to return and judge people
for their decisions/actions?” Jesus is
loving, just and righteous. He lovingly gave
humans the ability to choose to obey God.
Jesus is just and grants people the outcome of our sinfulness. Jesus is righteous and cannot allow
unrighteous people to be in his presence; so, he gives his righteousness to
those who follow him.
For me, Christ’s return will be bitter-sweet. It will be sweet because I will be able to be
with my Lord in his domain for all eternity.
All of Christ’s followers will be gathered together. It will be grand and glorious. Christ’s return will be bitter in that family
and friends who do not know Jesus will not be headed to the same destination
that I am.
Come Lord Jesus!
