Larger Catechism – Day 16 of Lent
Question 39: Why
did the mediator have to be human?
Answer: The mediator had to be human so that he might improve human
nature, obey the law, suffer and make intercession for us in our own nature, and
know first hand what human infirmities feel like; and so that we might be
adopted as sons and have comfort and access with boldness to the throne of
grace.
Jesus knows “first hand what human infirmities feel like.”
God is not distant. God
is not indifferent to what people feel and experience. God is not disinterested in the ups and downs
of human life.
One of the things that impresses me about Jesus is that his
humanness allowed him to experience what we experience. Jesus wept at the tomb of his good
friend. Jesus was frustrated with his
disciples and their not grasping key points of his message. Jesus know what it was like to be hungry and
thirsty. Jesus knew what it was like to
have people hate you. Jesus knew what it
was like to say “yes” to the Father.
Jesus (God) knows what he go through—and he cares.
There is no post tomorrow (Sunday, March 8). Sundays are not a part of the 40 days of Lent. Sunday is for worship! Have a wonderful time tomorrow worshiping the risen Lord.
