Larger Catechism – Day 20 of Lent
Question 44: How
is Christ a priest?
Answer: As priest, Christ offered himself once for all as a spotless
sacrifice to God to reconcile the sins of his people, and he continually
intercedes for them.
The high priest held a special role in the life of God’s
people. The high priest was the only one
who could wear the Urim and the Thummin—the special stones that would reveal
the will of God. The high priest had to offer a sin offering for the sins of
God’s people, and for himself. The high
priest would conduct the service on the Day of Atonement. The priest would offer a sacrifice for
himself and for God’s people, he would then enter into the Holy of Holies with
the blood of the sacrifice and sprinkle it on the mercy seat of God. He did this to atone for himself and the people
for all their sins committed during the past year.
As priest:
- Christ revealed the will of God to the people of God.
- Christ offered himself as the sin offering.
- Christ’s cross becomes the mercy seat of God and it is there that we find forgiveness.
- Christ enters into the presence of the Father to intercede on our behalf.
In Jesus we have a most wonderful high priest!
Note: We are now half way
through Lent 2015. I hope and pray that
this series has been a blessing to you as you prepare for holy week, good (or
not so good) Friday and the resurrection of Jesus on Easter morning. Hang in there. There is more to come!
